A Thai Theravada Approach to “Invite” Buddhist Relics

Dedicated to Ruth Harding

Partially transliterated, translated, and compiled by E.T.Harding (Ven. Dhammagavesako)

There is a belief in Thailand that Buddhist Relics can spontaneously appear, multiple, and disappear by themselves. This guideline has been compiled for those interested in trying a Thai Theravada approach of “inviting” Buddhist Relics for their veneration and inspiration that their presence brings.

A warning, Relics are not common items to be bought or sold. They should not be trivialized, the same can be said for Buddha Images, Buddhist Amulets/Talismans, “Sak Yant” (Yantras tattooed), ….

For the benefit of those who do not know - some important points, do not point your feet at Relics or Buddha Images (do not step-sit on Yantras or let them be stepped-sit on). Do not keep Relics or Buddha Images/Talismans in low places (ex. trouser pockets) or where they can be stepped over.

Try to have an appropriate place (ex. high shelf) and housing (ex. “miniature stupas”) to worship them. Try not to handle Relics barehanded (dedicated spoons are usually used) and do not have intimate relations, in front of them, or with Buddhist Amulets/Talismans on (a separate room for worship and meditation is ideal).

This is regarded as common knowledge and practice in Thailand.

Procedure to Invite Buddhist Relics

1. Prepare the place of worship, make sure it is tidy and clean.

2. Prepare a pedestal tray with jasmine flowers at the place of worship (if you have any)

3. Prepare a bronze bowl with clean water in front of the place of worship (according to an ancient procedure)

4. Make sure you have cleansed yourself

5. Make your mind clear and concentrated

6. Uphold the precepts

7. Chant Recollections of the Buddha, Dhamma, and Saṅgha (“Namo”, “Itipiso, …”) at the worship area on a white cloth/cushion

8. Chant Relic veneration and invitational chants

at the worship area while sitting on a white cloth/cushion

"A Basis for Understanding Spiritual Realms (incl: Guman)
CelestialDev

This article is posted because there are many people asking about spirits like Guman Thong, Barang amulets and;

- How are the results after having them
- Why do we have them
- How do they work
- Why some of them can be felt and some not
- Why (Ajahn Faj says) Spirit from this monk is good and from that monk dangerous…

Ajahn Faj thought of putting this together for a basic understanding of dealing with spirits and how they work. If you continue to read, please promise that you will put as much effort into understanding as he has put in order to compose – in order to understand the matter. I promise it will answer some of the questions you ever wanted to know in case you are interested in Thai (or other culture) amulet and hope it raises more questions as to who or what stimulated your interest in the matter.

In order to gain this understanding you have to put your imagination in a little example stated. (Note that it is just an example and therefore does not relate to a certain person – and certainly not to me either). It is further my intention to warn people and to encourage them for more meditational or prayer praxis in life –but well, most of this is based on my own experience on my journey thru life and might differ from person to person and from conscious to conscious of the individual.

Imagine the following example (a model of the spiritual world):
There are different realms (Please Google if you do not understand) in our world. Let us say we call our ‘life on earth realm’ the Neutral realm while there are 7 realms upwards (imagine them like layers) and 7 realms downwards (of course there could be 225 or such but its just an example to explain the function of spirit and amulet).

A human individual living on the basis realm is not One (Buddha teaching is that there is no ‘I’ or ‘Me’ neither a ‘You’ which is one of the ultimate truth) even if you convinced what you feel consciously is you, there are more parts with or on ‘your’ soul which are just hanging there and together they form the ‘I’ or the ‘You’.

For example we have Mr. X. He is a good person, he likes children, as he has a own family, and is taking care good of them - but sometimes, once he loses control, he can get very aggressive. It happens that he kicked a person on the ground and nearly to death when he was young, because he just couldn’t help himself. He has a normal sexual lifestyle but at times he just indulge in fantasies by watching rape movies on the internet, DVD or Videos etc, what he realizes is that there are times when he does that in a excessive way and there are times when he doesn’t care at all. Sometimes he likes to lie in order to avoid dangerous situations. And he tends to be very greedy as he loves to be rich and powerful.

With this example I would like to show that one can say that not all parts of Mr. X (in a spiritual sense) might be Mr. X’s real core (soul) but it could be that demons are hanging on him (like parasites) in order to enjoy Mr. X’s aggressive moments, or living in his unlawful fantasies. And they sometimes might drive his pent aggression much further than he would like to go, perhaps eventually killing somebody. The following result will be what I call later... He gets heavier.

As to how far those parts are demons in the form of an own entity or part of Mr. X, he himself is hard to figure out, but one get aware more and more due to meditational praxis or due to psychotherapy, we are all having weaknesses which easily open us to demons (of the same vibe), which further open those weakness till it might go out of our own (conscious) control. Their ultimate goal to make us even heavier and heavier.

Let us come back to our example about the layers of realms. Similar to our Neutral realm there are higher realms where are Gods, Angels, Devas or a realm where much higher developed former human beings are residing. And there are lower realms, where beings also exist - like ghosts and demons.

Like one might see easily, that the words used for the entities who exist in the higher or lower realm are combined with a positive (angel) or a negative (demon) suggestion.

Basically it is more correct (and easier to understand) if you call

* the higher beings the ‘lighter beings ‘ – the higher you get in realm the lighter they become (in vibe),
* and the lower being you call the ‘heavier beings’ (the lower you get, the heavier you and your parasites get until the final level).

It is with this that human beings on our Neutral realm are sometimes searching for a “door” (coincidentally or by meditation or spiritual life) to move up to higher realms (temporarily) – getting lighter, or moving down to lower realms – getting heavier. (It is like a door opens into a lift or escalator).

The teachings of the Giants of the world (how Ajahn Faj loves to call them) shows us many ways to become lighter, and therefore enable us to communication with beings in higher realms through such an open door.

Why it is so difficult to find an opening, there are many reasons and therefore I will give an example.

In order to communicate, you have to have the same (for higher beings – lighter) vibes which lets you swing in the same pace – this has to be true for at least a partial part of your being mind or spirit which has to be this level – on the other hand it might be that the higher being has partial vibes of lower level. These areas come together for ‘communication’ or experience.

What you need else is the ability to understand this communication with your brain, as many higher beings would love to give you the knowledge (path to enlightenment, plan for nuclear fusion) which they have, but you could not understand, if your cultivated abilities are not done for such kind of information and therefore they won’t bother to come to you.

Yet again some other higher beings just do not want to bother with you, as they are disgusted because of the deeds you do and the convictions you have. (This mostly is recognized due to the vibe you spread and not due to moral.) Most beings, who ‘talk’ with humans, have been humans on a former realm therefore they can adjust their own vibes easier and low enough in order to get in contact. That’s why some people have experience without even practicing, as it just depends on the vibes we have.

If you get angry why some of the higher entities are so ‘arrogant’ or ‘ignorant’, being disgusted to get in contact with you, just imagine a little example. (Cockroach.)

One have to understand that in order to get in ‘contact’, the mind (or conscious, or spirits) overlaps with each other and you even might get more information or expressions than you would prefer to receive –as there is a transmission of more than just words and the process differs from verbal communication.

An entity who got in contact with you knows what it wants to know as long it is able to understand - and even more than that, it even comes in touch with vibes of you it doesn't want to – During such a process, even keeping secrets would be very difficult.

There are beings never incarnated in our Neutral realm before so they just won’t understand our way of thinking or our doubts , demanding things from you which might be not easy or even quite insane to do.

‘Let go of everything – your house, your family and follow my call...’

Take an experience for example where your conscious overlaps with that of a maggot eating rotting flesh (a being of the lower realms of conscious) – I am sure you will turn away, disgusted – some experiences would be just so strange that they not fit and therefore not communicate (the experience of a stone for example.) maybe driving you mad. In the same way you would want to avoid such an experience is the same that goes for the lighter beings not wanting to have contact with you.

There are even those kinds of lighter beings which are so powerful and light that they would destroy your physical body and therefore they won't come to you, as they don't want to cause your extinction or make you physically sick.

So, if there are many teachings on how to become lighter, the question remains: How come some people become lower [heavier] and why would some people even want that?

The answer is – if we do not move a gradient upwards (and often boring and fixed life) in our Neutral realm, you go lower by life experience, due to experience like hatred, broken hearts, and delusion.

There are direct ways to get heavier e.g. excessive drug abuse, sex orgies....[it is a hint; similar to black magic practice of the west]

Mostly we end up weakened and vulnerable… in a sense of giving up and being humble, admitting we are overwhelmed, and that we need help, being on the ground. Due to this experience - we get “heavy, heavier, heaviest” and while we are becoming that, other spirits of the lower realm just jump (piggy ride) on us ‘while we pass by’ pulling us lower and making us heavier at a quicker pace. The question: Why are they doing that?

Imagine a bright\ and powerful angel with a mind as clear as a crystal, full of love, got in contact with you (visual or mental) – How would you react? How would you feel?
Wouldn’t you want to clinch on to this ‘heavenly’ being to rise with it in its highest levels of consciousness having experience, abilities and knowledge which you never could dream of?

Well the same do the lower beings with you, hoping to develop and having experiences through you, experience they never dreamed of e.g. In the case of an evil demon – real rape in flesh matter or at least sharing your mental abilities of fantasy. And maybe useful experience like helping somebody due to compassion and love - which creates vibes for getting lighter It has to be noticed that we are not able to shake those spirits off as easy as beings of the higher (lighter) realms are able to shake us off, but it is doable

Here I have to put in two more explanations as they might contradict;
1. 'Shaking off'' easy or not easy is relative ... to shake a lower being of you have to stop the deeds or tendencies or thoughts which attracts this being. Therefore shaking off is as easy or as hard you are able to stop that what attracts it.
2. The impression that higher beings wants to have nothing to do with you entirely is not correct - there are many who are very interested in our realm and experience, and some who are helping selfless - without you even clinching on too much.

I have to include that when I speak about lower beings I don’t mean only EVIL beings. There are extremely evil beings but also more or less good, at least very useful beings in the lower realm as there are in the higher realm. Also not every higher being will lead you ‘to a good end’, from your point own point of view and not every heavy being is evil - or even want to jump on you. Only some and mostly such who fit to your pattern. (‘Seeing' some heavy vibes of you harmonizing with theirs.)

Next I explain why we drop realms or even would like to drop in realms. While we are dropping low the landing is often very soft, - mostly softer than we would have expected, fighting against the drop, being afraid of the worst. Once becoming humble to the sight, 'we are done' – there are many well-meaning beings of the higher realms who are able to spread their abilities over numerous realms (even to those lower than ours) and starting to nurture us – giving us fresh power to grow yet again – to become once more strong enough to pull now more lower spirits of the heavier realms with us, transforming the good parts of them - or even being able to shake them off.

That is the job my friends ... a process of purification.

Another easy reason why some like to drop is, because it is easier to use the demons on heavier realm to practice black magic - for a high price of course.

There is further an explanation why (if you are experienced) the advanced level of meditation or prayer are getting more and more difficult, and why you get haunted from beings (often even evil ones as they are the heaviest entities) of the lower realms when you are making positive progress. (Christians see this as tests by “God” and temptations from the “Devil” and its minions)

They are afraid you will shake them off, as you get lighter due to practice – therefore pulling on to you to throw you back (sadly often successfully) in a way to avoid you getting too light for them to reach. The heaviest beings fall off first - such are the most evil ones that also torture you with horrible visions and temptations of your weakest point.

Now, let us move to the amulets and monks. Sacred amulets, like Buddha amulet e.g. Somdej or - as there was a poster who said instead of a Guman Thong he got a Pim of Wat Paknam – such items are items of the lighter (higher realm).

If you are upset that such an item gives you no experience – it is just because you are not able to come in contact with such powers whom are blessing you from a very high realm. For the used example LP Sodh’s Pim demands meditational practice from you and is VERY EXTREMELY helpful to get in contact with incredibly high deities.

A (real) Guman or Barang amulet is often easier to have experience with, than with such a sacred object. Therefore we should worship and honour the higher amulets always, even if we feel nothing. Do not forget that they make you a little lighter.

So what happens to such amulets and how they differ, or at all: what does it mean, if we possess them (or they possess us) and where does it leads?

Classic real Guman Thong and Khun Paen and Hoon Payon or other Barang are all deities of the lower realms ( you can count LP Jeuds bug amulet also to that group).

It is very difficult to decide what the amulets are, and what results they cause, as only the master himself, who has done them knows really what he did. The most dangerous barangs are those items of ‘masters’ who got in contact with a deity of the lower realms and just confuse that with enlightenment – creating amulets for their disciples, leading them astray even without realizing his deeds as they are in delusion too.

So for example you get a Guman Thong, a spirit of lower realm, maybe it have never been born or it experienced interrupted birth. It will be closer to human vibes.

Such a spirit can be very helpful to us as it has gifts and knowledge you might not have and as it serves you (making your material living easier and protecting you and your family) in order to develop itself with the experience of your life maybe even becoming a part of you or a member of your family depending entirely on case to case.

That’s the deal, but surely you should learn from what I have written till now that:

1. Freeing the Guman due you thinking or deluding yourself: “Oh the poor Guman Thong wants to be free, so I will “free” it so that it can incarnate again, and I gain merit for freeing it’, which means in reality, that you are scared or just too lazy to pull through what you committed to starting out without much thinking and you want to get rid of the responsibility.

Freeing in this way means you are trying to push the spirit back to its lower realms without finishing the experience or receiving any merit gains. Don’t be too sure that the spirit leaves you – even if you destroy the physical body (amulet). They can cling on to you in the same way other demons can and do already, but now they might distrust you (because you betray his love and trust for you), a challenging experience you will not wish for.

The best way is through hard work to develop lighter and lighter due to prayer, merit gains and meditational practice. Work on your personality to shake of dark sides (demons of the lower realm, who are holding you back).

Best for most people is NOT TO GET THAT KIND OF SPIRIT. But it depends on your own personality, as a few others who adopt and rent them can lead to extraordinary effort in meditational practice and accumulated merits due to united efforts of good deeds.

2. Freeing a Guman or Lukok or other spirit, because it is a spirit forced into the amulet in order to be caught in the lower realm (e.g. lady who died during pregnancy, children who die, aborted children so-and-so), only in order to serve you as slaves, would be a better deed in this sense of gaining merits but can be very dangerous, as you don’t know how the outcome will be. It is much better not to get such items as they mostly put a bad habit (greed or sexual fantasies) into the concrete meaning of the word “heavy and rigid”.

Repeating this again and again will bring you to lower realms – let’s say for example to the behaviour of an animal (that is said without the intention blaming the poor animals for their natural behaviour).

This comparison shows us a little where the difference lies between spirit and spirit or master and master, and how hard it is to meddle the way through for clear view.

Pointing out the danger of getting many (real) spirits (of the lower realm) means that the weight of the spirits (heaviness) pulls us down into the lower realm, and we (hopefully) might be able to pull them up through life – but if their weight is too heavy it is very questionable that you are able to incarnate back into human realm (let alone a higher one) with that many spirits and demons weighting down ‘your’ soul.

You will lose the war of fighting off spirits off yourself (yourself is what you have been once you incarnated this life - which was a quite acceptable being, being able to incarnate) shortly after you die and your merits (lighter energy) just ends and have to be recollected again. Some people could even end up becoming Guman with all its risk in order to develop higher.

Now imagine, you get a Mum/Dad who loves to develop many Guman together and she/he adopts you, not seeing your weight of your life before… Will you get lighter or heavier? Will they succeed or will they go down together with you and the rest of the other Guman? Would you be happy if they free you because they suddenly get too lazy to collect merits for themselves and for you? Armed always with the knowledge, you become heavier and sink even deeper and deeper.

The only point of getting deeper or getting heavier spirits is to get some help for material living and to help each other to gain merits. Besides that, being heavy and low is for experiencing – the sweetness of getting help from higher deities who take care and heal us then. But isn't this the same as taking a hammer knocking on ones own knee in order to get the doctors attention?!?!

Be very sure that being heavy means suffering. Something out of your current imagination of this world.

It is the nature of things that this world will not be enough to get everything clear, and I do not know everything of it anyway – being a seeker of my own.

But I thought it is important for people meddling with spirits to know – which includes me too and answer some questions in how far a spirit is good or bad for you or me.

Summary: getting a sacred amulet like a Wat Paknam amulet is quite a blessing even if you feel nothing and no spirit – collecting many of them can’t harm in any way – while meddling with (TOO MANY) spirits can be more dangerous than one might imagine.

"...SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Asanas should be practised in a well-ventilated, clean room where there is free movement of fresh air. The floor must be even. Asanas can be practised on the sandy bed of rivers, open airy places and by the sea-side also. If you practise them in a room, see that the room is not congested so as to allow free movement of hands, legs and of the body.

2. Asanas should be done on empty stomach in the morning or at least three hours after food. Morning time is best for doing Asanas.

3. It is always better to start Japa and Meditation in the early morning at 4 a.m., as soon as you get up from bed. At this time the mind is quite calm and refreshed. You can catch the meditative mood now quite easily. Meditation is more important. In the early morning, as soon as you get up from bed, the mind is like a clean slate, free from worldly thoughts. Perceiving "Auras"

1. Focus on the black dot for a suitable length of time until your concentration is fixed.

2. With your focus still on the black dot gradually use your peripheral vision to focus on the red and blue spheres.

This trains the biological eyes, for the inner eye you might be interested in this the "CIA Remote Viewing Manual" (Be forewarned, you might start attracting "attention" which can be of all persuasions.)
